Job Overview:
The Head of Accounts is responsible for the full financial management of the law firm, ensuring accurate bookkeeping, regulatory compliance, cash-flow stability, and strategic financial planning.
Job Description:
Financial Management & Accounting
Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable/receivable, invoicing, and reconciliations.
Maintain the general ledger and prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
Oversee cash flow and ensure sufficient liquidity for firm operations.
Monitor budgets, expenses, and financial performance against targets.
Prepare financial reports for partners and support decision-making.
Legal Finance Compliance
Ensure strict compliance with Professional Accounts Rules.
Manage and reconcile client accounts, ensuring segregation of client money.
Prepare documentation for regulatory audits and liaise with external auditors.
Ensure timely submission of tax filings and other statutory obligations.
Billing & Revenue Management
Oversee time recording, billing cycles, and credit control processes.
Work with fee-earners to reduce billing delays.
Implement and streamline billing workflows.
Payroll & HR Support
Manage payroll, staff expenses, and pension contributions.
Coordinate with HR on salary reviews and benefits.
Systems & Process Improvement
Manage accounting software and legal practice systems.
Improve financial processes and data security.
Strategic Planning & Advisory
Provide forecasts, budgeting support, and scenario planning.
Advise on pricing models and cost-control strategies.
Support business planning and operational improvements.
Job Requirements:
Skills & Competencies
Strong understanding of legal accounting principles.
High accuracy and attention to detail.
Strong communication and analytical skills.
Proficiency with accounting and legal practice software.
Ability to manage multiple priorities.
Qualifications & Experience
Accounting qualification preferred (AAT, ACCA, CIMA).
3–5 years of accounting experience, ideally in legal/professional services.
Knowledge of client account rules.
